It is a group of bandits who would have acted on behalf of Boko Haram for money because the Katsina region is far from the stronghold of Boko Haram. As it was difficult for the kidnappers to deliver the goods to their destination, there was no choice but to engage in negotiation in the face of the mobilization of the defense and security forces who are on their heels. The alert was early.

Despite the claim of the kidnapping of the 500 children by Abubakar Shékau the leader of the group Jamaat Ahl Al-Sunnah Lil Dawa Wal Jihad (JAS) of Boko Haram and despite their release on Thursday, however the mystery remains about the exact author of this kidnapping . It should be recalled that a group of armed men who came on motorcycles stormed around 10 p.m. on Friday, December 11 the Kankara school in north-western Nigeria. Under the nose and the beard of the police, the attackers took the time to empty the school of its 500 boarding students to lead them to the city ring road, a reputed bastion of organized crime. The day after the kidnapping, the governor of Katsina said he was in contact with the kidnappers for the release of the young students. Thursday, December 17 at around 9 p.m., around 450 students found around Tsafe, in Zamfara state (north-western Nigeria) were brought back in trucks by security forces. For the Center for Studies for the Development and Prevention of Extremism, CEDPE, the kidnapping was not directly carried out by Boko Haram but it would have been subcontracted. Indeed, under military pressure and especially after the last Chadian military operation in Bohoma, the group which is affected by serious internal divisions broke up into several factions and today only has around 6,500 people in its ranks. 44.77% of its workforce of 14,520 people (end of 2015 - beginning of 2016). Of the 6,500 people belonging to Boko Haram on the ground 1,690 are women. Taking this detail into account, there are only 4,800 active fighters left on the ground scattered across the different factions. Moreover, kidnapping is one of the techniques used by Boko Haram. They come at dawn to surround a village and gather all the inhabitants before choosing two to three people at random and slaughtering them then asking the opinions of others. In the face of terror, all the villagers immediately swear allegiance to the sect. Today, Boko Haram does not have this possibility because it has lost more than 85% of its territory and 8000 people between dead and disengaged.
